MathWorks, Inc signs a pilot agreement with CCLS to test scalability of Distributed Computing Server on the Amazon Cloud Infrastructure

A team from CCLS (Haimonti Dutta, Hatim Diab and Manoj Pooleery) is collaborating with MathWorks, Inc. to test the scalability of MATLAB Parallel Computing Toolbox and Distributed Computing Server (MDCS) on the Amazon EC2 / S3 Cloud.

In the epilepsy project, sequential signal processing and machine learning algorithms are being used to process massive volumes of EEG data.  This is extremely compute intensive and there is a pressing need to parallelize jobs. The MATLAB Parallel Computing Toolbox and MDCS were first tested on in-house multi-core machines and clusters. In order to achieve even more scalability and run algorithms in real-time, pilot studies are being conducted on the Amazon EC2 / S3 Cloud. MathWorks, Inc will provide the Amazon Machine Images (AMI) required for the processing and work with researchers to analyze the type of job managers to use (such as built-in MATLAB job managers, TORQUE etc).

This work is sponsored by an Amazon Web Services (AWS) in Education Research Grant which provides free access (upto a credit of $3000) to the Amazon infrastructure between Dec '09 - Nov '10.
